Title:  Paid Programming

Site:  North Ave. and Honore Street, Chicago

Artist:  Jeff Zimmerman

Year:  1997

Scale:  14 x 80 feet

Materials:  Acrylic Paint on masonry

Information:  Using English and Spanish wordplay, references to corporate logos, a bar-code flag, and portraits of local people, this aesthetically innovative “anti-billboard” mural is a meditation on the commercial forces that shape our lives and public space. The mural’s provocative juxtaposition of consumer abundance and stark poverty is especially relevant in this rapidly gentrifying West Town neighborhood.
